I've never read anything by Wendy Holden before so I can't say where this ranks in her oeuvre, but I'm surprised by the vitriolic reviews. I thought this was great fun, full of witty lines and engaging characters. I read this while enduring a long-running plumbing disaster and it certainly kept my mind off it. I look forward to reading more by her.

I really didnt enjoy this.....I rarely allow myself to not complete a book, not matter how awful it is, as I am always filled with hope that it will improve. Let me just say, this is not the first one of hers that I was fed up with after a few chapters. It really is just awful. If you like chic lit, go buy some Keynes, Kinsella or Parkes.....SERIOUSLY....AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE, its just not worth the time or effort.

better than I expected....... - Rated
this was my first Wendy Holden book as I felt like reading something "light" ! When I began it I didn't think I was going to be able to finish it as she puts in way too many adjectives. But it was an entertaining read and I did enjoy it. The only gripe I had was that one of the characters ( I won't give away who!) whose behaviour throughout the novel was eccentric was supposed to have been bipolar and was whisked away to some asylum. NOOOO! As a sufferer it irks me that an author can hijack the condition (she obviously knows little or nothing about it) and in doing so can only do more harm than good
Good read but a bit too long - Rated
I like Wendy Holden's writing as it has a humorous edge to it and this is no exception. I felt the first 150 pages could have been compressed into about 50 without losing any of the plot. I think Morag Ashbutt-Pesk is a brilliant eco-warrior - purple trousers and purple hair and totally off the wall ideas about eco-friendly living. Then there's the slightly de-ranged vicar who is looking for a wife - any wife. The primary school headmistress who is recovering from a bad relationship, and the solicitor whose wife died in a car crash, not to speak of the American couple; the local lord and lady of the manor fallen on hard times and the hooligan child causing havoc at the school and a WAG trying to get planning permission for a mansion in the country all make for a varied and interesting cast of characters.
Allotments become flavour of the month and ignite what becomes almost all out war amongst the villagers. The ending is surprising and satisfying. I found it laugh out loud funny in places and some of the descriptions are priceless as well as the character names - e.g. Wak Wak Oops - A firm of Dutch architects working for the WAG. My only criticism of the book is its length, and you could almost miss out the first 100-150 pages and still understand the plot. It's a good read in spite of the slowish start.
