Customer Reviews

Enjoyable - Rated 3/5
I wasn't sure if this was an adult or 'young adult' book at first but as the book progressed it brought in a few more adult themes (in a tasteful and amusing way). The book is broken up into episodes which, I felt, gave the book a slightly disjointed feel. But having said that, it was an enjoyable read and was easy to get into. Perfect for the long commute to and from work. I enjoyed the various characters, especially the main heroine, Brenda, with her mysterious and shady past and her slightly irritable best friend, Effie.

There is a sequel available called 'Something Borrowed', and I will definitely have a read of that soon.

Gothic Fun - Rated 4/5
The chapters read almost like episodes of something like Night Stalker or Buffy. The two main characters, Brenda and Effie are two older women living in Whitby, the town notorious for having had Dracula beach there. The stories suggest that Whitby is a wierdness magnet.

It's episodic and somehow that takes away somewhat from it, but it also adds a certain amount of slow exposure to what's strange about some of the people and happenings in this small sea-side town. It's as you read that you realise that not only is the town wierd but Brenda and Effie aren't normal either.

A light series of stories that link well together and leave room for more at the end, nothing amazing but quite diverting.

Never the bride - Rated 5/5
The setting of Whitby, the town that that inspired Bram Stoker, is perfect for this book as it provides the gothic setting for a story that includes vampires, witches, aliens and more. Even the protaganist is not what she sees-who or what is Brenda?
The ending suggests a sequel and I hope there will be one.

Interesting Plot That Fails To Deliver - Rated 2/5
When I first picked this up in the bookshop I thought it sounded really interesting and well worth buying. I now regret that. The only reason this book got finished was because my flight was delayed and this was the only book I had on me. Worth pickingup in the library but definately not worth your money, this book fizzles out at the end to a plot that never really got going.

A Rich gothic fantasy - Rated 5/5
This is a very funny and engaging story that will appeal to fans of old horror movies, graphic novels, Doctor Who, Buffy, Kolchak and Coronation Street. It's a witty account of a rather strange Whitby land-lady who encounters various bizarre characters and creatures.

The book is well paced and leaves you wanting more from the main characters - hopefully this is a series that will run and run.
