Don't Mess With Mama - Rated If there is one woman you do not want to mess with it's Mama Ruby. The woman with special powers that can bring back to life, and make people disappear, and drink beer like it's soda, and will not allow anyone into the upper room which holds her gift from God Maureen. There are a myriad of characters in this novel that will keep you laughing, in shock and wanting more. Although Maureen is the one in the upper room the real protagonist of this story was Mama Ruby, and the lengths she would go to in order protect her daughter. My only disappointment with this novel was the eventual showdown between Mama Ruby and Othella. I felt that what could have been one of the highlights of the book was rushed and justice was not truly done. Like other novels by Mary Monroe I do feel sometimes frustrated that her characters stay in a situation for far too long when the open door is always there, but part of the fun is always how long it takes for them to eventually use the door. A delightful read in rich language and with characters you will not forget too quickly. Another 3.5 star novel by Mary Monroe
