Avengers Re Imagined - Rated
Like your comics intelligent, humorous, character driven, with a bit of politics that read like you're watching a movie - then this is for you.
This creative team has already spoilt fans of the Authority & now they're busy spoiling fans of the Avengers.
The Characters are obviously familiar, but with a twist. The twist however is not purely to be different and get some press, its to flesh out the characters, giving them depth and a "humanity" not normally associated with the normal, good guy Vs bad guy Superhero comics.
Whether you're an Avengers fan / a Mark Millar fan / a Bryan Hitch fan / or you like your heroes darker, more cynical than most traditional comics, this is a title for you.
Marvel reboot is Ultimate - Rated
The great thing about the Marvel 'Ultimate' line is that it pretty much clears the slate for the characters we have always loved and allows them to be seen realistically in a modern day light. The Edgy character driven plot dealing with issues such as domestic violence, Alcoholism and our sense of where we fit in is both strong and thought provoking. My only real concern is Nick Fury, who is really, really overcooked in Millar's,Hitche's and Currie's attempt to bring a Samuel L Jackson pastiche to the Marvel Multi-verse. Well worth checking out!
Not the Avengers!! - Rated
I know people praise this book for being more 'realistic'...but lets face it: a man that can throw a shield all over the place; a woman that can shrink (and lays eggs!); and a man who can grow amazingly tall; a green monster! None of this can possibly considered as realistic and to try and make it so by introducing sleezy storylines and brutal characters is just a shallow attempt at writing. If Mark Millar wants to write about real people then he should write about real people - not characters that run around in spandex with 'out of this world' powers and abilities. If, like me, you prefer heroes to be heroic, then avoid this book (despite the wonderful art it has inside!).
A great reworking of the Avengers - Rated
A friend bought me this as a birthday present becuase the guy who owns the local comic book store recommended it as being "like Alan Moore, but not Alan Moore". It lives up to this description quite well! It's a character driven story which is mainly designed to introduce you to the cast. The fact that it does this while remaining gripping and enjoyable is a good testament to the creative team.
The new spin on the established Marvel characters works very well indeed. The combination of military stuffed-shirt Captain America, regretful hedonist Iron Man, hippy James Hetfield look-alike Thor, pathetic loser turned ego-driven monster the Hulk, bipolar hypochondriac Giant Man, flirtatious Wasp and Samuel L Jackson-alike Nick Fury make for an engaging team. Whether the plotting will keep up the high standard set by these character-driven stories remains to be seen - but I'm going to buy the other volumes ASAP!
A special mention should go to the artwork. Bryan Hitch has never impressed me before - usually being seen as a poor man's Alan Davis imitator. But his artwork in this book is fantastic - possibly topping Mr Davis and better than most of the current crop of comic book artists.
I would definitely recommend this book - it's a good read and looks great!
Good but not the Ultimate - Rated
I'm fairly new to comic books and in particular The Ultimates. Having read Utimate X-Men and Ultimate Spiderman I moved onto these guys. As I knew nothing of the Avengers I came into this book as a complete novice and feel this may have diminished my enjoyment. I think the main issue was the pace of the story, as I knew nothing of the characters I was left wondering when the story was going to begin. That said the artwork is as good as any I've seen and I like the modern setting just like the X-men and Spiderman collections. The great thing about all these Ultimate collections is the fact that you just keep on reading and you get wrapped up in the storylines. As a result I will definately be reading on and I suspect that as we find out more about the charecters the story will become more absorbing. I gave this 4 stars purely because of my lack of past knowledge of the characters. I think if I was already a fan it would have gotten 5 stars
