A great graphic novel - Rated 4/5
And I suspect a consequence of a lot of the moral issues that the UK marvel comics team used to muse over on the letters pages of the old newsprint paper comics in the ninties.

This is a narration of a post-kingpin Hells Kitchen, the gangs are getting vicious and persecuting the law abiding population more mercilessly than ever before while Dare Devil and The Punisher each attempt to deal with it with their own individual approach to crime fighting, Dare Devil co-operating with the authorities and beating up criminals, The Punisher dispensing lethal force, they consider the role that each other is playing and gradually begin to consider that their alternative approaches to crime fighting are part of the problem rather than part of the solution, eventually concluding that each other are a bigger problem than their criminal opponents.

I thought it as very interesting how the dialogue and narrative developed, the art work is fantastic and there is an engaging sub-plot involving a law abidding family's victimisation by criminals, a young person's idolisation of the punisher and armed responses to violent crime. It was also great to see the return to the Jackal, who appeared in the Spiderman comic in which The Punisher made his original appearence, and his portrayal as a frightening criminal.

However as a fan of the Punisher I was really disappointed at the way in which Frank Castle is being consistently portrayed as a sort of imbecilic obsessive-psychotic hopelessly out matched by other super heros both in terms of super aptitudes, moral calibre and dealing with his past and origins.

Fans of this book would love the Marvel-DC cross over in which Batman/Bruce Wayne and The Punisher confront one another, the theme of territorialism or patch working by superheroes/vigilantes is revisited and Microchip features in this story while he's abscent in Means and Ends. Personally I liked it better although the art work was not as good.
