Dark and frightening reimagining of a 60s classic - Rated 5/5
What was the best Marvel story ever told? Was it the death of Gwen Stacy in Amazing Spider Man #121 ? Perhaps the Dark Phoenix saga told in The Uncanny X-Men? Or perhaps it is the story of the day that the planet-eating Galactus came to Earth, a story that began in issue #48 of Fantastic Four...

The Ultimate Galactus Trilogy retells this classic Marvel story and manages to exceed its source material in every way. Ever wondered where the Avengers and X-Men were when Galactus turns up in New York City? Ultimate Galactus addresses this, bringing in not only the Fantastic Four, Avengers (or Ultimates as they are called in this universe) and the X-Men but also the Kree superhero Captain Marvel, Vision, and even, oddly enough, Misty Knight.

The concept of Galactus is a brilliant and frightening reimagined here and draws just enough on the iconographic source material to satisfy the old fans while bringing it up to date (that purple suit with the big "G" just had to go!)

It should be noted that the movie version of the Galactus story (Fantastic Four:Rise of the Silver Surfer) takes some influences from Ultimate Galactus but failed to pull it off. Read Ultimate Galactus and find out how it should have been done.

Things to look out for:
Vision does a Starbuck - Vision is now female (most of the time)
Iron Man vs Silver Surfer - You just know someone's going to get hurt

The best, ever, Ultimate Marvel Story Arc. - Rated 5/5
In many ways Ultimate Marvel is superior to the original Marvel comics, and these 14 comics are one of the reasons why: The art is some of the best I've seen in Marvel Comics (Pencils Trevor Hairsine and Inks Simon Coleby), and also the plot and the dialogue written by Warren Ellis is as usual spot on. This is an all round brilliant story.

The characters we see in these books are Nick Fury, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Phoenix, Wolverine, Colossus, Professor X, Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman. Also, in these story arcs, we are introduced to the Ultimate versions of Falcon, Marh-Vel (Captain Marvel), Vision, Silver Surfer, Misty Knight, and of course Ultimate Gah Lak Tus.

The plot: The worlds communication systems break down, and are replaced with images of Death and Aliens, making thousands around the globe to commit suicide. The broadcasts also reach psychics, and so Professor X and Phoenix are informed. Professor X tracks the Broadcasts down to Russia, and sends Colossus, Wolverine and Phoenix to find the source. But, Nick Fury also tracks down where the communications are coming from. Nick Fury, Falcon, Black Widow and Captain America go to find the source as well. Numerous enemies who were the results of the Russian Super Soldier Program attack both the X-Men and the Ultimates. The X-Men and The Ultimates eventually clash. The Ultimates defeat the X-Men yet the X-Men escape. They find out the source of the broadcasts is a robot called Vision, who is warning them of the coming of Gah Lak Tus.
Captain Marh-Vell was sent from his alien race the Kree to witness the destruction of the Earth by Gah Lak Tus. But he chooses to fight back, resulting in what could be the end of the World.

Each of the individual characters' personalities really sparks, Falcon is really cool, and Wolverine is still sarcastic about everything. I also like the idea that Silver Surfer is a henchman of Gah Lak Tus. You have got to see the remake of Gah Lak Tus, it is really different from Marvels, and it is an excellent and completely new idea. And of course the art, I really think that Trevor Hairsine and Simon Coleby are way underestimated, the art in these is some of the best you will see in the Ultimate Marvel Comics.
