A great follow up to the first volume - Rated
When i first saw that the Immortal Iron fist was to get another run at the end of 2006 i decided to pick it up for 2 reasons, 1) I am a fan of some of the lesser known characters in the Marvel U and 2) Ed brubaker was to be writing it and pretty much everything that man touches turns to gold these days.
I read the first volume and while it was good I didn't think it was brilliant. However I got the sense even then that the first arc seemed more like a platform to set the scene for bigger things to come then anything else and that's exactly what was confirmed when I read this second story arc- "the seven capital cities of heaven". This follows directly on from the first volume with Danny being summoned to fight in the Kung fu tournament held every 10 years between the 7 cities. There is so much going on here I can't put it all in this review, plus most of it would be spoilers, but suffice to say its action packed with some great fight scenes (the deadly weapons from each city are all great characters), has side stories involving Hydra, his business partner and friend Jeryn and the heroes for hire, has a lot of flash backs to flesh out the original story behind Wendell rand (and why he never became an Ironfist), Orsan Rand and Davos, and all ends with a a teaser for where the series could go in a future arc. The art fits the story really well (also suited Daredevils run with this artist) and not surprisingly Brubakers writing makes the character and his world an addictive one that you just want to read more and more about.
What is also worth mentioning here are the one shots this series is also producing, they are GREAT. Most of them are collected in these TPBs/HCs so if you only read this series in collected form don't worry you'll get them too. I particularly like those which focus on other Ironfists who have lived throughout the ages (from decades ago to hundreds of years ago in completely different times) which is a great angle for this series to add to and one which only Brubaker would have thought of.
In summary this really is a great comic to be reading right now, but I suggest you don't just buy the first volume because that alone is not enough to get the full picture of what this comic is all about, you should buy this 2nd volume too and the third one which is out soon because these then build on the main story and be the basis for what could be a very long and successful run of this charater.
