The Marauders return! But for the best? - Rated
If you have been following Mike Carey's run on X-men (If not its highly recommended. The first three arcs are collected in the 'Supernovas' hardcover, this arc being the fourth.) then it can be seen that this arc brings many plot points to fruitation. These range from the actions of Mystique to the more important plot point of the Decimation. (If this does not mean much to you I recommend 'House Of M' as this is the driving force of all the X-men franchise in comics.) The resolution of these plot points aswell as the push of others gives this arc a very high octane feel continually hitting each beat of the story without slowing down until the conclusion that leads into the event 'Messiah Complex'.
So with all of this praise why only four stars? Firstly the art can be a tad bit... well messy. Although it gets the job done there are moments when it seems as if the pages are rushed and when it gets to the final fight it takes away from excitement as you have to spend time working out what exactly is going on in the panels. Also another point that takes away from the enjoyment is the story itself. I may not be a newbie to the X-men but on my first read through it was hard to understand exactly what was going on. Sure I know the basic plot line, but when there is mentions of 'Destinys Diaries' and 'Mutant Massacre' it left me scratching my head and going onto wikipedia to get the information. Although it only took a minute to update myself on X-men lore it just seemed to detract from the enjoyment of a decent story.
These points aside this is an excellent X-men story that sets up one of the best X-men events over the last ten years.
Big action, fast pace, just a little rushed. - Rated
Well, the story is pretty epic, but because it plows on so quickly it loses the epic feel. The Marauders are after certain items that are in the x-mens possession, and they don't want the x-men to know what they are up to. Psychics are taken out, as are those who see, or have knowledge of the future. It all ties in with Sinisters plan for "saving" mutant kind. Suffice to say the X-men are betrayed from within and decimated. Only a weakened iceman and cannonball escape, to uncover sinisters plot and save the others.
The story rattles away all too quickly, but is exciting and full of action. The art is solid, but not exceptional. Still I enjoyed seeing Iceman and Cannonball shine.
