Average adaption of classic Fantasy novel - Rated
I think the novel Magician is one of the best examples of modern Fantasy - a classic. So seeing this trade paperback graphic novel version I was compelled to have a read. Now, I'm in my late 40's so have moved on a little from graphic novels (yes, yes I know they are not just for kids) but still think they can provide an interesting alternative vision of a book (David Gemmell's being a good case in point).
Here we have a graphic novel that is very true to the original story, but (as other reviewers have pointed out) the artwork changes half way through and we move from tall and lean figures to child-like almost manga types. The quality and enjoyment drops as soon as the artwork changes -a real shame.
So readable but a real opportunity lost maybe worth re-reading the novel again instead!
Inconsistent - yet good - Rated
Enjoyed the first installment. Only disappointment was that the illustrator and colourist are changed half way through, would have preferred the first guys throughout as they were more polished. Still worth a look although I may not continue with the series. These first six chapters take you to Pug and Tomas leaving Crydee following the meeting with the elves.
Comic series - Rated
I suspect the two "reviewers" above me have missed the point. This is not a reprint of the novel we all love. It is in fact a series of comics based on the Novel - This trade paper back collecting the first six comics in one volume.
If you have not yet been introduced to Pug, Thomas and friends then this might be an exciting way to begin your journey. For myself now, I have an entrenched picture of the world, that I do not want to spoil with someone elses interpretation.
I urge you to read the novels themselves... the series in it's later life becomes diluted, but this, the start of the adventure will be the beginning of a love affair...

Why would you buy a book divided in to six volumes. Purchase the single volume or dual volume edition and save some money. The series is excellent, and for someone who has not read them, they are a must read!
