Excellent material, although supplementary aid is needed. - Rated
The contents of the Exam Guide is presented well. Problem is...much necessary material is simply NOT THERE! Features appreciated: many fine illustratons, layman's language, imparts a fine 'overall' feeling about Win95. Shortcomings: only skims the surface on some very important topics, not enough real-world scenarios, upon taking one set of tests you have taken them all--they merely repeat, definitely omits areas tested on MCP cert. exam, several misprints, contradicts Resource Kit more thatn once, review (test) questions are not nearly tough enough (nothing like the real thing). With the aid of the Exam Guide, I did manage to pass on my first try. However, I used the Resource Kit along with a little networking experience. Without either, I would be re-testing, for sure!
Supplement with other study guides & practice exams!!! - Rated
Although I passed the test with a higher score than expected (885), I felt it was because I augmented my knowledge with other materials (New Riders Windows 95 & Networking Essentials, Learning Tree Windows 95 Support & Networking coursebook and Transcender exams). I felt the book was written in a non-complex way to digest the technical material. The chapter exam questions were not challenging enough nor scenerio geared. For the life of me, I do not understand why the chapter exams, mastery exam, and the self assessment exam used the same old questions. The lab exercises did not hold my interest so I stopped doing them.
Adequate book, does not cover advanced issues - Rated
With this book and the Win95 Resourse Kit, I just barely passed the test. This book does not cover topics in depth enough. The Win95 R/K supplements the book very well. There is the possiblity of things being on the test that the book does not cover. Good Luck!
Very Good, you should pass with no problem - Rated
This book is an excellant preperation guide for the Windows 95 exam. I also used the Networking Essentials book in the same series(see my review there). I passed the exam with a 842 on my first try. It took me about 2 weeks of study on the train every day for about 1.5 hours. The book does an excellant job on System architecture, which is something that you cant learn from day to day experience. It was very easy to understand networking and printing, which are two biggies on the exam. The only complaint that I have is that the CD only contains a computerized version of the questions and nothing else, and the fact that a lot of that chapter questions repeated themselves on the mastery and assesment tests, in fact the answers were in the same order. It was difficult to actually try to answer the question by thinking of the correct answer rather than remembering if from before. I HIGHLY suggest that you also download the two sample tests from Microsoft. These will ask you questions different from those in this book. Also for the real timid people out there, there is an Exam Cram series of books that has very good questions in them. I'm using them to supplement my NT training. There is only two other things that I can say bad about this book, one is that I payed $84 at Barnes and Nobles for it. :-( Secondly is that Que has been slow to release other books in this series and I've had to switch for my NT training. On a side note, the Microsoft Self Paced Training for 95 is also very good, but doesnt contain any questions. But if does have some real nice videos.
Better 95 study guide than most others available - Rated
I read New Rider's MCSE Win95/networking essentials book cover to cover and still felt unready for the test. I read Que's book in four days at a local bookstore and was very impressed and more importantly, very confident for the exam. Passed the first time!
I feel guilty for not actually purchasing the Que book but will definately look to purchasing Que books for the other MCSE exams.
