A small business which has become a global icon - Rated
I picked this book up at a bookshop at the Hong Kong Airport and I found it a most fabulous read. Tony and Maureen Wheeler recount the story of Lonely Planet from its very beginning to virtually today.
Its starts off with how the two met in London, married and then set off on an overland trip from London to Sydney. Having arrived there, they decided to put all their notes of the trip into a book, which became the first Lonely Planet Guidebook.
The story then sort of divides into a two-track narrative. On the one hand the authors recount all the challenges and pain any business goes through from its origins to success and if you have or had this experience yourself you will find a lot of familiar information. Towards the end of the book, Tony mentions that he is quite keen on driving a Ferrari to work. Good on you mate, especially after all the work you have done for the rest of us.
But apart from that, there is also quite a bit on the competition. There is a bit on the various mishaps that can happen to you in the publishing business, which although often quite hilarious may not quite appear that way, when you are at the receiving end. At least the authors don't appear to be terribly amused.
On the other hand, the authors don't just recount a corporate story but also talk lots and lots and lots (need I go on?) about their travels all over planet Earth. To me personally this is the best part of the book. Make sure you pick up copy.
Perfect for Backpackers, but ... - Rated
yet again Wheeler, who started the truly awful series of Lonely Planet guidebooks, succeeds solely in blowing his own trumpet. Another Lonely Planet "book" to avoid at all costs.
