Mystical Dimensions of Islam - Rated This is probably one of the best books on Sufism, Professor A.M Schimmel has captured the essence of the Sufi way throughout her book, although it is not a manual for an aspiring sufi, it is an essential for any sufi. It covers the breadth of the orders and their methods, from the beginning to today. It is not too detailed as she has covered so much but more than enough for anyone to grasp the concept of Sufism. Essential insight into Islamic Mysticism - Rated Professor Schimmel has wriiten an excellent book detailing all aspects of Islamic Mysticism and Sufism. Covering major figures, ideas, philosophies, comparisons, politics, mystical poetry, extensive bibliography, footnotes and full appendix. Informative to an extreme and possibly the best book ever written on the subject - with the author being a renowned respected scholar. Not a 'sufis guide to sufism' or critical 'hate mongers' analysis - it is a comprehensive analysis of the fundamentals of Islamic Mysticism and proves it in the bare informative and enlightening way it is written. Comprehensive and easy to read. - Rated Covers in medium depth all the key practioners of Sufism eg Al-Hallaj; Rumi; Ghazzali. More focussed on individuals rather than methodology.
