Mostly "Common Sense" Tips - Rated 2/5
This book might sound full of new and fresh ideas for people who have never really traveled independently in their lives. I am a experienced low budget backpacker myself and find all the material in the book just "common sense", non-inspiring and boringly written. Especially the bullet points and the vagaboding voices look to me only very weak parts, only to bulk up the total number of pages.

Lightweight but enjoyable guide for the uninitiated - Rated 3/5
Potts' Vagabonding isn't so much a travel guide as a lifestyle guide, an attempt to inspire people to share one man's philosophy on how to live as an independent, mobile anti-consumer. The author preaches a balance of tourism with adventure, seeking friendship with going it alone, planning ahead with being impulsive. Balanced in all ways except perhaps his constant insistence on down-sizing one's life.

Peppered with anecdotes, quotes and common-sense tips, the book has varied ways of communicating but feels like filler at times. Most people who already have an open-minded idea of travelling the world and some experience under their belt will probably find much of the book simply backs up what they already know. Personally I found some small inspiration from the personal stories and general feel of the book, but ultimately was left unfulfilled. Certainly it's a short guide that can be absorbed in one afternoon. It's the younger and newer readers, about to embark on their first flight into the unknown, who will gain the most from reading this book.

Very good guide - Rated 5/5
written by an American guy in his thirties as to how to travel. Clear and simple, it will help you take off, and give you the confidence to be abroad without over-planning your trip. Highly recommended. I quote him in my book on travel, Travelling Magically: How to Turn Your Journey into a Life-changing Experienceand also recommend an additional two principles too.

Motivation for the dormant vagabonder - Rated 5/5
This book didnt really teach me anything new but it did motivate me and remind me what i love so much about this kind of travel. As with so many people who have been travelling and intend on going again but some how get caught up with the usual baggage which ties us down this book reminds you to get going again and that its JUST THAT EASY.
i wouldnt say his way is the right way and he can be a little one eyed about things but every traveller gets like that about somethings.
if your just tied down with a job and a mortgage read this book to inspire. if your tied down with a kiddie then prob best you dont read it as you will more than likely resent the little one for stopping you buying a plane ticket

Interesting in parts, but ultimately disappointing - Rated 3/5
There are some philosophical angles in this book, and advice/guidance on simplifying your life that I found quite inspirational and motivating, but on the most part I found it quite disappointing. Perhaps if you have never travelled independently this will give you some confidence. If you HAVE travelled independently already though you're likely to find the tone of the author quite patronising and condescending. Rolf Potts describes his first 'vagabonding' experience as a trip round Canada with his friends. Hardly intrepid stuff!! Having personally travelled solo off the beaten track in places like Pakistan I guess I find it hard to take advice and guidance from Mr.Potts. I bought the book because I thought it would guide me on escaping abroad for good, or at least a long time, but it doesn't tell me anything I don't already know. This is not a book for anyone who has already travelled, or has already taken the step of quitting their job and going abroad indefinitely. I wanted something to help with the difficulty of returning home and wanting to leave again! Oh, and there are annoying pages full of 'useful websites'. I'm sure we are all web-savvy enough to find 'useful' travel websites ourselves!
