Customer Reviews

A schmaltzy but comprehensively philosophical primer - Rated 4/5
I wrote my last review of this book before I had actually finished reading it. After the point at which I wrote the review, the book improved considerably, hence this amendment.
Although this book is often slow reading, it is worth it for the sheer verbosity of the information spread throughout. Any prospective convert's book collection should include this item alongside the other necessary literature.

Useful information wrapped in vast qualtities of schmaltz - Rated 3/5
I began reading this book with scepticism, considering its size, silver cover, and large font. This is a metaphor for the text within. Although there is useful information, including advice on the Bet Din interview, a general sense of the apparent attitude of some Orthodox rabbis, and outlines of the strict limits of behaviour in Orthodox Judaism, it is hidden like needles in a haystack. At some points it is almost excrutiatingly boring to read, with constant repetition, reiteration and unnecessary rephrasing. Other problems include incorrect references to the Torah. One quote is either non-existant or is far from the the chapter-verse numbers provided. Another is presented out of context in such a way that it gives the impression it was spoken by Hashem while it was actually spoken by a non-Israelite. I found this book to be at best wishy washy, and at worst insulting.
In summary, there are far better books for those considering converting to Judaism, such as Embracing Judaism by Simcha Kling and Choosing a Jewish Life by Anita Diamant.

I became a Jew... - Rated 5/5
Throughout my three years of prepatory study, I have never found a more precise culmination of the Jewish essence in written form. Although I did not convert Orthodox, the information contained therein provided me with an exceptional basis for understanding, and an acute ability to respond to the questining of the beit din accurately anf passionately. I cannot stress enough how much it means to me to now be a Jewish woman, to be a daughter of Israel, and a lover of Torah. And I also cannot stress enough how much information and support Maurice Lamm's book has provided me with. I completely recommend it for all potential geyorim, regardless of synagogue affiliation. Shalom, and mazel tov on your journey!
