Customer Reviews

Daily sustenance - Rated 3/5
Gerard Hughes never fails to satisfy. This is a book that anyone who calls himself or herself a Christian, or is a searcher after truth, will enjoy and benefit from.

The first part of the book contains simple, practical and valuable advice and suggestions about using a short time of quiet each day, or whenever one can. The author is totally realistic about prayer not being an immediately natural activity for everyone, and his suggestions after offered in that spirit.

The second - and main - part of the book consists of daily portions over a period - as the name suggests - of seven weeks. Each day's section starts with some Bible passages, either to be looked up or read from the book itself in extract form. Then follows a page or two of reflections on the passages, insightful and incisive, encouraging and provocative at the same time. Gerard Hughes does not let one off lightly. Sometimes the provocativeness is gently painful. But it is also offers delight in daily living. Each section then finishes with a simple prayer. One can read, re-read, ponder and re-ponder to good effect, and with great enjoyment.

The book is to be greatly recommended.
