Customer Reviews

Classic Osprey, good for beginners on subject - Rated 4/5
Gives a quick overview of Russian Army 41-45.
Overpriced for what you get, as with all Osprey books.

Concise or too brief? I am not really sure - Rated 3/5
This is a difficult book to assess. On the one hand Steven Zaloga has managed to cover an awful lot of ground and gives a very good account of Soviet land forces during WW2, but on the other hand he is rather limited by the obligatory length of most Osprey men at arms. I can't help feeling that such a huge subject deserves several volumes rather than one slim one. Where does that leave this work? Well the military modeller will find this a pretty good guide to buttonhole uniform detail and a font of ideas for projects. Wargamers and those interested in Military History per se like myself will be a bit disappointed. My humble suggestion is the latter may find it more useful to buy one of Zaloga's Osprey Campaign series on Kursk or the superb Operation Bagration and treat this as a useful companion.
Having said this the text is a reasonably painess intro to the subject and the photographs are very interesting. The illustrations are up to the usually high standard but have the usual Osprey formula to them .....a three figure campaign tableau..with a couple of female subjects thrown in.
All in all a useful Men At Arms to have but I could not help thinking I wanted more.
