Customer Reviews

Ordered worship - Rated 5/5
In Shaping Up a United Reformed Church minister with considerable pastoral experience invites Reformed churches to re-order their worship to the majesty and sovereignty of God. Rather than being instrumental to church growth or ordered to therapeutic needs, `Reformed worship is doxological in form. It glorifies and praises God the creator, the sustainer and the renewer' (89). Advocating a renewed attention to the Eucharist and supporting a `high' doctrine of the ministry, this book is thought-provoking, elegantly written, and timely. It is worship ordered to the glorification of God that is most edifying and faithful to the church's mission within the world. Ministers and inquiring church members will greatly benefit from engaging with this book.

Well Shaped Liturgy - Rated 5/5
It's good to find someone writing not just about liturgy but from years of experience leading public worship. Marvin speaks to the passions of many who long for a reasoned defence of classic Reformed liturgical tradition. He speaks to it with good humour and modesty, combined with the rigour of the pastoral theologian and practitioner. Not all will agree with his conclusions, but even those who disagree with surely respect this important contribution to liturgical studies.
