A comfortable but surprisingly meaty study - superb value - Rated
The `New International Biblical Commentary: Genesis' follows the familiar series format: an `Introduction' (to p38) is followed by the commentary proper, after which is a `For Further Reading' section with a `Subject Index' and a (customarily difficult to use) `Scripture Index' to finish. This commentary divides Genesis into four `Narratives':
The Primeval Narrative - 1:1-11:26 (up to p129)
The Abraham Narrative - 11:27-25:18 (to p234)
The Jacob Narrative - 25:19-36:43 (to p308)
The Joseph Narrative - 37:1-50:26 (to p368)
Hartley's `Introduction' is very useful as it explains such complexities as `Structure and Composition' (up to p17), divine names and historical sources, etc. These difficult issues are explored with sufficient detail but without being too over-bearing.
The main text of the book covers each chapter or section of Genesis by offering a short introduction which precedes the verse-by-verse analysis, and at the end of each section are `Additional Notes' going into slightly more detail.
For instance: Page 100 is the account of Noah's flood: `The Great Deluge'. The introductory section offers brief details of date numbering in the account and the importance of repetition and form in the text. The verses are analysed separately (or in small groups) before the `Additional Information' gives a long-ish (in this case) account of the similarities and differences between the biblical flood account and the Babylonian flood account (which is fascinating!). There is also the occasional `Excursus' (e.g. `A Note on Culture' p88-90) offering some useful background information.
It might be true to say that Hartley offers a beginning to Genesis study here, rather than it's fullest expression but considering the price, you shouldn't complain! (The fabulous Word Bible Commentaries will cost four or five times as much.) This is a comfortable but reasonably meaty study. Warmly recommended.
