This is very much for the academic orientalist - Rated 2/5
This is very much a book for scholars and students, indeed, much of the book is facimile reproduction of Browne's original publications - which include many pages of Arabic text. Browne was probably the leading orientalist of his time - i.e. the end of the 19C and the beginning of the 20C. He is of unique interest to the Baha'is because he was the only Englishman to meet the founder of their faith and leave a written - and much quoted -account of it. He travelled through Persia for a year and his writings and translations, now for the most part long out of print, provide a primary Western source of material on early Baha'i history. This book provides easy access to these sources.

An essential companion to this book is 'E.G. Browne and the Baha'i Faith' which provides necessary background to Browne's work and travels in a well annotated, soundly argued account which clarifies what Browne 'got right' and what he misunderstood.
