'Light Railway Layout Designs' by Iain Rice is fascinating reading for all railway modellers interested in designing model railways, irrespective of scale, gauge or prototype. The author provides a general introduction on light railways, shedding light on their history and the special appeal they hold to many modellers. He then proceeds to present a number of beautifully drawn and described designs, in the same style as his earlier book on 'Finescale in Small Spaces'.
In some ways, the light railway book is a sequel to that thought-provoking work. In my opinion Mr Rice's references to it are not made out of self-interest, because the reader is well advised to learn about the typical design features mentioned, which are fully explained in the earlier work. These are mostly theatrical devices such as proscenium arches, wings and controlled viewpoints.
The book also contains a number of black-and-white photographs of both prototype and model scenes. It is altogether up to the standard we have come to expect from Wild Swan.
If this were not enough, Iain Rice's witty and highly original style of writing helps to make this a book well worth having for any enthusiast, even if he or she is not prepared to go to quite the same lengths as Mr Rice. You will never view layout design in quite the same way again.
