some points in the book do not not follow the traditional context of the Gelug school or Tsongkhapa - Rated
At page 31, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso establishes his own view:
"Experience shows that realizations come from deep, unchanging faith, and that this faith come's as a result of following one tradition purely relying upon one Teacher, practising only his teachings, and following his Dharma Protector. If we mix traditions many obstacles arise and it takes a long time for us to attain realizations."
These statements do not accord with Tsongkhapas tradition and Tsongkhapas own personal approach. Tsongkhapa himself relied upon the highest teachers of his time (over 100) from all buddhists schools and was even accused by conservative Buddhists of practicing eclecticism. Also he refuted misconceptions even from his own teachers. The Dharma protector (Dorje Shugdän) and Highest Yoga Tantra practice (Vajrayogini) Geshe Kelsang emphasizes are not in the works of Tsongkhapa.
I think some points in the book should that's why be observed with a critical distance and should be checked with other sources on their reliability.
A surprisingly varied feast - Rated
On the surface this book is a commentary to the widespread Gelug practice of Lama Chöpa - Offering to the Spiritual Guide - an extensive Guru Yoga of Je Tsongkhapa - and preliminary to Mahamudra meditation - written by the first Panchen Lama and designed to suit Highest Yoga Tantra practitioners no matter what meditation deity they practice.
You might expect this to be a rather dry explanation of a pretty long practice (2+ hours), just explaining the meaning of each verse.
In fact, Geshe Kelsang's enthusiasm bubbles through the book until it has somehow covered lots of other topics as well, including the lack of inherent existence of Buddhas and all sorts of suggestions about increasing your happiness through spiritual practice. As you may know if you've ever attended a Lama Chöpa offering, it's a bit of a dinner party and one of the most pleasant things you can do at a Dharma Centre, and this happy mood shines throughout the book like a little sun. Highly recommended for any Kadampa (or Gelugpa, if you don't mind using a tiny bit of Tipp-ex to substitute your own personal Dharma Protector:-)
Excellent, for me - the true Dharma - Rated
I love this book. It contains the profound teachings of Je Tsongkhapa's tradition, as passed down through the Ensa Whispered Lineage, and now offered to the modern world by Geshe-la. For anyone interested in practising Sutra and Tantra together, this has to be the way forward.
