Customer Reviews

Could have been good... - Rated 2/5
Two would be adventurers set off looking for lost tribes in the heart of unexplored Borneo without a decent pair of boots between them.

Most of their time is spent trying to find guides, but it seems that the locals have better things to do. Meanwhile they have some interesting adventures but they cant tell us much about the best ones because they were drunk at the time.

Eventually they are taken into the jungle and they quickly realise that without their guides they would soon perish. Suffering from malaria and dysentry, and incessantly dreaming of Western comforts, they are relieved when they quickly cross through the jungle and back to civilisation.

Not by any means as good as the Fenton / O'Hanlon Borneo account, as most of Everleigh's book seems to be building up to a major adventure and one feels let down that it never really happens.

Even so, the writing is quite entertaining and it does make me want to rush to Borneo as soon as possible, or to any of those other unexplored 'white spaces on the maps' while there are still some left.

Good, but not amongst the best of this genre. - Rated 3/5
Having visited Borneo (but not having the time or guts to dive right into the jungle) I snapped this book up when I saw it. It's a stimulating enough read although I feel the build-up to the main part of the journey was too long in comparison to the narrative of that particular section. I was left at the end thinking 'Oh, right, was that it?' - a shame given the exciting adventure that Mark had endured, although perhaps understandable given the effects of the malaria he suffered from.

INCREDIBLE, CRAZY AND FUN JOURNEY THROUGH BORNEO - Rated 5/5
The journey through the island of Borneo makes for an incredible and a bit crazy adventure, which is described in a most readable and humourous style. A highly recommendable read.

ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING ADVENTURES I READ - Rated 5/5
I was immensely thrilled with Mark and Paul adventures when they attempted and -narrowly- managed to cross Central Borneo unexplored jungles. This book is entertaining, exciting and fun at maximum level.

Don't bother! - Rated 1/5
I read this book shortly after I expatriated to (a different part of) Borneo, hoping to find out more about the island. Unfortunately I was very disappointed....

The book is about a pair of guys, who are crossing Borneo in search of a nomadic tribe living in the mountains. Unfortunately, their expedition is beset by problems, and it takes them a long time to actually reach the mountains, and their actual trek accross them is covered in about 5 pages. Then follows the tedious journey to the other side of Borneo....

I'm sorry, but I got the impression that the author had only written the book because he was required to do so by the organisation sponsoring him, and this was the best he could come up with.
