A true insight into a real life struggle! - Rated
I found this book to be a real help with the way I look at others and their situations. Before reading this book I felt it was so easy to look at others and write them off as bad parents. But having read this book I have really turned my opinions around and realized I can never really know the true story.
This book is well written and was very hard to put down! Jan and Luke really seem to have made many break throughs which can be put into all life, even non autistic life.
Thank you for this book!
lacks flow but it is informative - Rated
I have many mixed feelings about this book, it was interesting and I feel sorry for her struggle but I felt she was slightly full of self pity. I heard both her and her son speak, and they both gave wonderful presentations.
I was disapointed with the book, it seemed to jump from subject to subject with no clear direction and did not have any real flow. As soon as I became interested in part of the book, the subject would change and I did not feel I learn anything from it.
There are many books about children with aspergers, and I feel this is not the best.
the best book I've read on this subject - Rated
I heard Luke, the subject of this amazingly truthful and sometimes shocking book, speak at Hull university last week. To read his mum's story of his life with labels and then hear him speak, eloquently and with humour about his 'differences' was incredibly moving and a real eye=opener. I recommend this book to everyone who needs to understand what it's like when, as Luke puts it, 'your face fits but your behaviour doesn't'. I think he will go far and he deserves to. Both the Prime Minister and David Cameron have signed copies of this book.
Enlightening - Rated
"What impressed me with this book was the open and honest way that Jan Greenman talked about her life with Luke. Whilst suffering from Aspergers Luke seems extraordinary in that he has the ability to express himself with great insight. This helps the reader to understand what it must be like to suffer with Aspergers. Luke's tips at the end of each chapter were enlightening as were his sister Abigail's tips and comments on having such a brother to deal with."
Everyone should read this! - Rated
I was unsure whether I would enjoy this book, but I was quickly hooked. As a parent (carer) of a boy with ADHD and Aspergers it was a breath of fresh air to find that someone else had very similar experiences to my own. The emotional impact of these experiences was also familiar and reassuring.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is involved as a parent, carer, key worker or professional with children with these difficulties, or anyone interested in this area. It is an accurate picture of life at the edge. It's a better read than a lot of the fiction you see about this type of subject, because it is real.
