Not for beginners... - Rated If you're new to pattern cutting I would recommend that you get some background knowledge on patterns first before using this book - even buy some patterns to play around with before progressing onto the book, just to get a feel of what you're working with. It is a good point of reference for pattern cutters with a bit of experience but I wouldn't recommend it to someone just starting out. There are often bits missed out, it is assumed that you will know what they are & if you don't know, you won't have a complete pattern. You'll end up doing guess work, which isn't a good thing. There are also certain calculative methods missed out too that are essential to beginners, especially regarding working out certain angles/shaping of a pattern. Invest in a simpler & more detailed textbook before purchasing this one. Or if you can, do a course first - making patterns can be quite complex & it's good if you have someone that can guide you through the stages of pattern cutting. metric pattern cutting - Rated I bought this book and it has opened up a new world.I had a design in mind and it was in this book!I needed to to a waistband for a pair of jeans and the outline was there.I have done a pattern cutting course so this does help. Then it shows you how to adapt those blocks to end up with different shapes and effects. There are more types of sleeves, collars, frills, etc than I thought possible! It is hard work, as learning anything this complicated and 3D from a book will always be difficult. I've spent a long time scratching my head, and also referring to sewing encyclopaedias. But I'm really really pleased to be able to design things that actually fit me! It's the one time it's really good to be a non-standard shape - you know it's going to be worth the time and effort to design things specially. Basic instructions to adapt the blocks, great to gain confidence, at which point you might want to move on to a more "wordy" writer like Natalie Bray. Patterns aren't necessarily the prettiest rf the most up to date, but the information is there. very useful - Rated Does just what it says, provides one with the metrics to cut patterns. Combined with my new copy of Coture Sewing Techniques I'll be unstoppable. Watch out Alexander McQueen.
