I adored these stories as a child and after reading this edition, I find that I still do!
Great Stories - let down by illustrations - Rated
Even though the stories aren't exactly as i remember them from my non-pc 70's versions they are still full of magic, both my 5 year old and 3 year old are enchanted by them (excuse the pun!!)
Unfortunately, the illustrations really let this edition own. They are ameuturish scribbles scattered through the book that do detract from the story. My 5 year year old very quickly picked up that the story described the elves in chapter 2 as having beards down to the floor and yet the picture showed them as clean shaven. A small detail perhaps but it does ruin your enjoyment of reading the book.
If you can get a version with different illustrations do!!

An excellent review of an excellent book! :-) - Rated
I was busy browsing in a bookshop one day when I picked up this glossy paperback. I remember that my sister Amanda got a copy of it for Christmas a while back and it got all bashed up because she read it so much!
Anyway, I decided that it might be a nice book to read--a bit different from the usual stuff that I read (teenage girls' books)
And as soon as I read the first chapter about the family moving to their little house in the country, I realised it was such a good book.
I think it is suitable for people for all ages and is great value for money! :)
