This is packed full of ideas. - Rated
It is always a brave move to put the words "encyclopedia" in to the title of a book. I just stopped while writing to test this out, I looked up "bindweed" in the index as this was the first thing that came into my head. It leads me to a few pages and tells me how much "field bindweed" can spread in a single year and how weeds work and the invasion technique it uses. Following another page I can see a picture of "field bindweed" and "hedge bindweed" their survival and spread and three ways to help control it.
It is not a dictionary and you do have to read a little to find the information but it all seems to be in here. It covers just about every size of garden that you can think of, suggesting that even a 4ft square can be productive and gives a suggestion on how to use such a plot effectively with an amazing variety for a single season.
I could rant on about it forever, it tells you how to make your own seed, shows you how to encourage good wildlife whilst keeping bad ones at bay. Shows you pictures of what the good bugs look like and tells you why they are good.
What I would like to have seen and maybe I am asking a bit much here. A few DIY projects, for instance giving measurements for making a cold frame, it does show you lots of pictures though and tells you the advantages and disadvantages of them all. Look I am having trouble finding fault with it. If I lost mine and a replacement cost double I would pay it, that's all the praise it needs.

I ADORE this book. It is beautifully presented, with loads of useful photos and illustrations. Packed full of essential information and advice. Sit and read it snuggled up by the fire on winter's evenings ready to get out there in the spring to put it all into practice. Not one to take out gardening with you for reference: you'll need something less hefty!
Brilliant for new gardeners - Rated
Simple and comprehensive, i found it useful for someone completely new to gardening. We want to go organic and it explains all about it. Maybe a bit hardline in tone at time but still invaluable for anybody adhering to the organic philosophy.
