Customer Reviews

A brilliant travel guide - Rated 5/5
I bought this book a few weeks before going on a 10 day holiday to rome and found it incredibly helpful. As well as giving lots of information on the more popular attractions such as st peters and the colosseum, there is an extensive amount of information on the lesser known, but equally as impressive sights.
As well as showing rome area by area, the Rome at a Glance section is brilliant as it gives a short list of the top attractions, then goes on to list the best churches, fountains, museums, etc.
Altogether a brilliant book to have with you whatever your doing and wherever you are in rome.

Not to the same standard as other Eyewitness guides - Rated 3/5
We bought this book a month before going to Rome for a long weekend. It is helpfully divided into sections represnting the various "burroughs" of Rome. What would have been really helpful is a Top 10 style list of what to see in the whole city. I guess you have to buy the separate Top 10 Rome book for that..
We read pretty much the whole book and it covered a lot of background information. I felt there was a lot missing about specific attractions, wrong or absent advice about when best to visit them (for example the Vatican Museum is an absolute MUST as part of the borader Vatican/St Peters visit, but has HUGE queues in the morning when all tour operators insist on taking you, none at all in the afternoon!). There's a half-hearted section on hotels which is better removed or expanded to more than one or two hotels per category. Their system for ratings is a mystery (compared for example with TripAdvisor or Expedia)
If you're going to spend a week or more in Rome, this books is probably more to your liking. You need to combine it with plenty of internet / hotel concierge research..
