Fantastic. A loping , gentle nightmare that marches to the beat of its own drum until you're addicted to every page of its beautiful story and sumptuous images. I need more.
Lovely Drawings, Shame About the Story - Rated
I agree with the first reviewer, the drawings are rich and detailed with lots of original touches. Also this book has certainly had lots of high profile praise - Anthony Minghella, Alan Moore, Harmony Korine. Unfortunately, however, the story does not match the depth and intricacy of the illustration. The characters are actually fairly clichéd and disposable, despite their exotic appearance. Everything seems to be trying too hard to be cool and iconic. By the time I reached the end I couldn't help but feel that the whole thing was... Well... Just a teeny bit dull. Example: The first page of a 'chapter' ends with "... in an apartment like so many others surrounding it... an astonishing scene unfolds." I turned the page expecting something amazing! And... it's a lady smoking a cigarette. For a whole page. Astonishing!
There seems to be a certain incongruity between the drawings and text, which is a shame because the illustration is great. Maybe I'm just used to the consistent richness and maturity of comics from the Fantagraphics stable (Richard Sala, Jim Woodring), but this feels pretty lightweight to me. This would be a five star book if a bit more scrutiny had been given to the actual narrative. I'd like to give it three... But the drawings don't deserve it. Wait for the paperback.
The most beautiful graphic novel I have ever seen - Rated
It's hard to describe how intriguing and beautiful this book is. The drawing is so detailed and precise its easy to see why it took nearly seven years! You can read and re-read it and keep seeing new things.
Aside from the drawing, the story and characters are wonderful. A classic battle between good an evil without the usual corny stereotypes. I hope this is the first of many Salem Brownstone novels.
Certainly worth getting the large format, hard cover, first edition. I'm sure it will be different in reprint...
