Disappointed - Rated 2/5
As I was familiar with the book Cranford, it seemed like a good idea after the series to read the 2 other stories woven into the BBC version of the novel: My Lady Ludlow and Mr Harrison's Confessions. If you're contemplating the same thing, don't bother. My Lady Ludlow must be the weakest construction Mrs Gaskell ever engaged in, using a vague character to act as observer and first person narrator that never quite works. Then she devotes nearly 1/3 of the book to a story about acquaintances caught up in the French Revolution, connected to the rest of the novel by the tenuous thread, "That reminds me of...." But most disappointingly, the wonderful character of Mr. Carter is not nearly as strong in the book. The film version is actually a composite of two men, neither one bearing the name of Carter. Carter's redemptive death was so powerful onscreen, but nothing of that magnitude exists in the book. At the time of watching the series I was impressed with the way the screenplay wove 3 stories together so seamlessly and effortlessly. After reading this book, I am in absolute awe of the writing that created the BBC series. Get the DVD of that and don't bother with this book--unless you're really into the French Revolution.
