Everyone Loves a Theological Discussion! - Rated 5/5
Ok so I might be in the minority as far as the title goes, but yeah. 'The Gods of Reason' basically goes about describing the theological "doctrine", for want of a better term, within modern Hellenismos (which is a reconstructionist pagan religion, focused upon re-building/practicing the public religion of Ancient Greece). The book is clearly and concisely written, which is refreshing given the topic of discussion. I remember studying a lot of the philosophy presented in the book whilst in education... it was bad enough wading through it the first time -- but luckily the author has a nice grasp of language, so he presents this (at times) rather mind boggling subject matter in easy terms.

The book talks about, more or less, everything Hellenes "believe". Since Hellenismos is an orthopraxy as opposed to an orthodoxy not every Hellenic Recon would adhere to the beliefs presented within. Alexander intelligently analyzes a wide variety of topics, drawing on multiple ancient and modern philosophical sources, the results of which reach some very interesting and rational theological conclusions -- most of which I heartily agreed with. Although, it was getting a little murky around there for me in the argument regarding evil.

The main topics covered are: Cosmology, Emanationism, the nature of the Soul, the Afterlife (I always feel happy whenever anyone mentions Plato!), The All or Divine Source and Ethics (always a fun debate... I am actually being sarcastic this time). The argument presented within this book was well reasoned, rational, spiritual and scientifically based. Religion does not need to reject science in order to exist, but rather Mr Alexander shows us that science and religion can be in harmony without conflicting ideology.

Overall, The Gods of Reason is an elegantly laid out theological discussion which would do well for anyone interested in theology or Hellenismos. Thoroughly recommended!
