Customer Reviews

Very informative, yet Straight-forward and simple to understand. - Rated 5/5
This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn bushcraft and survival skills. Mors Kochanski has broken the different aspects and skills down into simple stages, with easy to follow diagrams. I was particularly pleased to find that he uses non technical language to explain things. This book is full of useful information. A nice easy read and well worth the money.

outdoor skills and wilderness survival? - Rated 2/5
This is the first bushcraft/survival type book I have bought. I found it badly written and editted. The whole thing is completely without passion. The first chapter stresses the impotance of being able to start a fire: the best way is by sparking a knife against a sharp rock. The rest of this chapter deals with starting a fire without a knife etc...and is extremely muddled, so that you end up confused about which woods are good for this purpose. The chapter on Knifecraft mainly stresses the importance of not cutting off your own fingers, yet instructs you to steady a branch for cutting by holding it between your knees or leaning it against your thigh -something you would never need to do and which could result in a terible injury.
I am sure Mors Kochanski would like to communicate to us his love of the great outdoors/ using natural materials etc... but on this evidence he is unable to do so.

More from Mors - Rated 5/5
A book by a canadian guy who was teaching and living the skills he teaches when that Brit guy was still in dippers! if you wanna learn the skills safetly and sensibly this is the book for you.
My question is that now Mors has retired when will he pen a second book?

if you like ray mears then you will love this guy - Rated 5/5
i bought this book a year or two ago and ive read many a so-called book on wilderness survival but this one is definitely up there with the best. even though the illustrations are pencil drawings they easily get the point across. mors kochanski is reputed to be one of the finest bushcraft instructors in the northern hemisphere and this book does him proud. this book deals with skills that you really need like axe and knifecraft, shelter building and fire-lighting.this book doesnt teach you how to stay alive in jungle/desert which to be honest none of us are ever going to come in contact with during our lives! buy it now, you wont be disappointed!

not practical. - Rated 2/5
This book is frankly a waste of your money. if you are going to spend it, spend it on a more practiacal book. Bushcraft spends 35 pages telling you how to hold a knife, it almost insults a person with any common sense.

One other thing, it does not have any pictures, all line drawings. (most impractical, and innapplicable in the real thing)

It does not have anything on traps, snares, or other devices, which will make-or-break a person in wilderness survival.

This is a good book if there were none others available, however, there are many which are a much greater value of your money, like Primitive Wilderness Survival Skills, by John McPherson. Check authors like: Jim Riggs, Larry Dean Olsen, Tom Brown, Richard Jamison, to name a few.
