Confessions of an angry adept - Rated 2/5
Israel Regardie attempts to justify his reasons for breaking his oaths of secrecy and publishing the secrets of the Golden Dawn. He was initiated in a "secret" but degenerate tradition that he sort to preserve by publishing.
It is an interesting read between-the-lines, Regardie is so ultra-defensive about his motives and indeed about his material. He is all too intent on challenging those he perceives as his critics.
Of especial fun is the raucous caused by Ellic Howe's "Magician's of the Golden Dawn", who dared to chronicle the Order's faked historical origins. Gerald Suster M.A. (Cantab), who also happens to be Regardie's sycophantic biographer, demeans his credibility with his essay "Modern Scholarship and the Origins of the Golden Dawn", in which his line of argument is plain silly. Behind all the invective and puff one senses he really knows he is on a loosing wicket...
Regardie is often held to be one of the sanest of the 20th century adepts. In his old age he became especially fervent about the Golden Dawn system of Magic (for which he held copyright) becoming quite dogmatic and sounding more like a fundamentalist than an expander of conciousness.
