Amazingly beautiful book. - Rated
I have been involved in jewellery making and design for quite a few years now and it is fair to say that I have evolved both in what I make and in what I am drawn to as inspiration. I only just ordered this book recently, I have an unbelievable amount of jewellery books of all categories - making, metalwork, mixed media, inspirational books etc - So put this off for a while. When I finally ordered it I was blown away by the content, I literally was so overwhelmed with inspiration and beauty and general eye candy that I didn't know what to stop and look at first. It turns out that i carried this around with me for a while, flicking through it and still not knowing where to stop and start to read! Now that my "new book frenzy" has eased off a tad I'm seeing that the contents of this book are valuable master classes. You will need working knowledge to attempt some of these things but I feel that even if you didn't have the skills YET, this volume would definately inspire you to greater skills. I have wondered, if I'd got this book a year or so ago if I would have found it so wonderful, or if its fine craftmanship and advanced skill might have eluded my developing metalworking mind. I do find that I "grow" into books such as these. I have on occaision bought a book that I didn't really get on with but then after months of it sitting gathering dust have plucked it out only to wonder why on earth I didn't like it as much. This happened with Liz Olvers The art of jewellery design. Its content eluded me before because I wanted pictures and eye candy inspiration of things I could attempt in my own way - but that book was very focused in on Design principles and the process - which has become invaluable to me now. I see jewellery in a very different way now. As my skill has grown I've learned to appreciate and pick apart things that I may not have liked before. Its noticing all its parts - just because I may not like heavy granulation, it doesn't mean that a heavily granulated brooch with a fantastically unique setting doesn't get my appreciation and interest, because I see ALL of its parts now.(I didn't used to)
So, this book, I find it incredible. i love it and I aspire to its level. I intend to read every word in it and memorise every picture. I rarely give 5stars nowadays, but this truly deserves it. I'd give it an extra 2 stars for sheer beauty and layout inside! Anyone serious about jewellery making/design/metalwork/silversmithing/goldsmithing and mixed media approaches should really love this book.
