A childhood favourite - Rated
I loved Rosemary Sutcliff's books as a child, and this was my favourite (along with Knight's Fee and Simon). Alexios is in disgrace after a mistake that cost the lives of many of his men and is "promoted" to his first command - an irregular company called the Frontier Wolves. At first he struggles to win their respect and to live down his previous error in command, but gradually begins to settle in as commander. His friendship with Cunorix, the son of the local chieftain, is one of the most important strands of the book, and one of the joys of this book is the vividly-depicted life of Celtic Britain and the uneasy and fragile compromise with the Roman invaders. It is a fascinating depiction of the strains and rewards of policing a border far from the heart of an empire.
However, things begin to go wrong for Alexios and his men with the arrival of an arrogant superior officer who does not understand the fluidity required of troops guarding a frontier. The final part of the book is a gripping description of a desperate flight under sustained attack and includes a moving and believable description of single combat that will make you unable to put it down until it's over.
As with many of Sutcliff's books, this is a story about friendship and honour and learning who you are. I recommend it to anyone who liked The Eagle of the Ninth - Alexios even has Marcus's flawed emerald signet ring and I like to think they are some relation!
