A great insight! - Rated
I bought this for my best friend and she loved it! We went to NY a month before and it was great to see all the places we'd been to.
A great present - you won't be disappointed!
new york then and now - Rated
i would rather call it manhattan. this is a great book of a great city with big buildings very interesting landmarks how it was then and how they appear today. i went to manhattan several years and thought it was a interesting city. my dad bought me the latest version of this book, which does show the twin towers in some pages but they are inset due to september 11, 2001 when they were destroyed was one of the saddest days of my life. it also shows the world trade center as it was first opened in the 1970s. this book is my 3rd favorite.
Seeing the city with eyes old and new - Rated
The book follows the standard 'Then & Now' format with photographs from the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries on the left with a view from the same spot (or almost) on the right from more recent years. (It amused me to see that the author has sought to copyright the 'Then & Now' format!)
The book starts at the tip of Manhattan and works northward. There are some very interesting historical photographs such as the cast-iron pedestrian bridge over Broadway and the huge Manhattan terminal of the Brooklyn Bridge that looks like a space-ship dropped down into City Hall Park.
Photographs cover the whole length of Manhattan, all the way to the George Washington Bridge. Each is accompanied by a short explanatory text.
A worthwhile book and a good price too. For those who know very little of New York and for those who think they know a lot, all will learn to see the city with new eyes.
Excellent book - great value - Rated
Wonderful pictures - a lovely size which do the images justice. Enough narrative to add interest. Excellent value for money.
