A diary of with all the good bits taken out - Rated 2/5
If you're after anything like Black Hawk Down, Bravo Two Zero, Generation Kill, Operation Anaconda: Not A Good Day to Die, Jarhead etc, look elsewhere! It seems while the Mr Tucker was in Iraq he didn't get to see much happening and what did happen to those he met is described in such a lifeless and undiscriptive way one feels none the richer for reading it.

At times the book is writen in a very irritating manner: much text is spent on his penchant for giving (it seems) every single soldier he meets a nickname and letting us know about anyone who wears a 9mm pistol in black leather holster.

The main problem with the book, though, is much of it seems to be about the author showing us how much he enjoyed hanging out with US soldiers, how much they liked having him around and what excellent soldiering skills he has from his Marine Core days (he even goes as far as recommending a unit destroy a building and tells them how to conduct a patrol!) If they'd given him a gun he would've started shooting!

Objective, insightful and I fear interesting journalism this is NOT!

Good in parts - Rated 4/5
Mr. Tucker is an experienced soldier and writer with obvious interest in the history of warfare. With this book he clearly has a story to tell, giving insight into the operation of US troops in modern day Iraq but his constant use of flowery language, historical quotes, and the anointing of every soldier he meets with a new nickname serves to obscure the real story. No mistake though, there is good material in here, well worth reading, especially his final conclusions.
