Book Details / Review - supplied by Amazon UK

As some readers may be aware, a hoax e-mail has been circulating widely on the internet that falsely claims Amazon has favorably reviewed this book. This allegation is, of course, absolutely untrue. Nevertheless, this rumor has become so widespread on the Internet that it's already a recognized "urban legend," just like alligators living in the sewers. Amazon.co.uk obviously does not endorse The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. This book is one of the most infamous, and tragically influential, examples of racist propaganda ever written. It may be useful to some as a tool in the teaching of the history of anti-Semitism, but it's unquestionably propaganda.

Does Amazon.co.uk sell this book? Of course we do, along with millions of other titles. You can also find books in Amazon.co.uk's online bookstore that analyze The Protocols' fraudulent origins and its tragic historical role in promoting anti-Semitism and Jewish persecution, including A Lie and a Libel: History of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Should Amazon.co.uk sell The Protocols and other controversial works? As a bookseller, Amazon.co.uk strongly believes that people have the right to choose their own reading material. Our goal is to support freedom of expression and to provide customers with the broadest selection possible so they can find, discover, and buy any title they might be seeking. That selection includes some titles which many people, including many employees of Amazon.co.uk, may find distasteful or otherwise objectionable. However, Amazon.co.uk believes it is censorship to make a book unavailable to our customers because we believe its message to be repugnant.

Furthermore, because we strongly believe that the appropriate response to repugnant speech is not censorship, but more speech, we will continue to allow readers, authors, and publishers to express their views about the books and other products we offer on our Web site.

We hope we have eliminated any confusion surrounding this book. If you happened to be one of the many who received the infamous e-mail, we would appreciate it if you would pass this along to your friends. It is very hurtful to everyone at Amazon to be accused of racism.

Thank you for your consideration.

Amazon.com, April 6, 2000 Review

Although it's a pernicious fraud, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion has unfortunately had a widespread influence--all of it evil--on the history of the 20th century. It was exposed as a hoax in 1921, yet it has been used as a justification for the Holocaust and for innumerable pogroms in Russia and the Soviet Union.

The Protocols was supposedly written in 1897 from the minutes of 24 secret meetings between Jews and Freemasons in which they conspired to bring down Western civilization and jointly rule the world. In reality, it is nothing of the sort. In 1921, Philip Graves of the London Times revealed The Protocols to be a fraud, showing it to be based on a French satire aimed at Napoleon III. In a series of side-by-side extracts printed in the Times, Graves demonstrated that the forgers took long portions of the original text, titled Dialogues in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, and simply replaced "France" with "Zion" and "The Emperor" with "We the Jews." Further investigations by the Russian historian Vladimir Burtsev revealed other sources for The Protocols, including a fantasy novel by Hermann Goedsche and, more darkly, the hand of the Russian secret police.

Sadly, despite its clearly fraudulent nature, The Protocols continues today to feed the fears of the credulous and to fan the flames of fanaticism and hate. --Perry M. Atterberry

Fraudulent - no grain of truth whatsoever - Rated 1/5
The original content of the "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion" was a conversation between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, the intention of which was to satirise the attitude towards seizing power of the current French Emperor Louis Napoleon. It was rewritten with the Jews as the antagonists in Machiavelli's place, in order to serve as propaganda supporting the Czar in Russia. Each one of the protocols is adapted, sometimes blatantly, from the source material, a satirical dialogue between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, two historical figures who were both long dead at the time of writing. It has consistently been proven fraudulent - and due to the Protocols' undeniable closeness to the source material - this proof can be considered concrete.

Judge for yourself-Don't rely on Lying Media and Politico's - Rated 5/5
No one can prove or disprove whether there was a meeting at which these "protocols" were agreed.

Personally I think not, but rather they are an allegory based on the facts as seen by the author.

However, read them for yourself, then look at how the world has developed since they were first published.
I think you may be surprised at how accurately this alleged fiction appears to fit historical developments.

Remember, the one thing everyone agrees on about this work is its age and composition, so no one can turnaround and accuse it of having been written to suit events retrospectively.

In any event, when those in power, be they the media which is indisputably international in breadth and very narrow in ownership, the "acceptable" politicians they decide to make rather than break in each nation and the officially tolerated "alternative(?)" left/anarchists (who so often rely on their rich parents handouts) all tell you to think and act in one way, like dismissing this book without reading it - that is a VERY good reason to do the opposite, and consider it with clarity and impartiality.

Are you up to making up your own mind either way for a change, or are you content to be another sheep in the field until mutton and lamb are back on the menu again.

Remember, you are only free when you make up your own mind based on ALL the alternatives.
Let some do it for you, no matter how trendy and right on they make it appear to do so, and you are just their puppet.

Also, trying to make the reading of certain books unacceptable is in practical terms the same as burning those books.

So you decide, are you with the book burns or the free thinkers.

Enlightenment - Rated 5/5
This book is essential for anyone who wishes to be englightened as to the current world economic situation. It answers many questions hitherto intractable.

READ IT and judge for YOURSELF - Rated 4/5
All these reviews stating how it is a vicious forgery. I say to those, READ IT. Just go and read it. The protocols are over one hundred years old. Just read it, and Judge the extent to which the protocols are validated by historical events over the last century. It is shocking, totally shocking. It will knock you back, make you think twice. To dismiss them out of hand, as many people would like to do is to ignore them. READ THEM and judge for yourself.

Poor literature, sick content - Rated 1/5
The first thing to mention about this book is that only about a third of it contains the 'Protocols' as per the title. The first third of the book is devoted to extracts from the 'Dearborn Independent', a newspaper published in the 1920s by Henry Ford. Mr. Ford was very keen on the idea of a 'World Jewish Conspiracy' and promoted the idea in his newspaper. Many of the articles refer to the 'Protocols'. Apparently he retracted his views before his death but the views he expressed obviously had some following not only in the United States but also in other countries such as the UK. Indeed the final third of the book contains a sort of ragbag of letters from various people on this theme which makes only tangential reference to the 'Protocols'.

Most people with some knowledge of the field know that the 'Protocols' are a forgery - there is really no need to labour this point. They are apparently loosely plagiarised from an earlier historical work. The book purports to offer readers an opportunity to decide for themselves though how one could do this without supporting material is anyone's guess.

The actual 'Protocols', I would have to say, are the literary equivalent of eating dry biscuits, whatever you may think of their content. I found it very hard to discern any pattern in them other than the rather naive idea that Jews spend all their time planning to take over the world. It rather reminds me of the joke about the Jew who came upon another Jew in Berlin in 1939 reading the Nazi newspaper: 'Der Stürmer'. When he asked why the first Jew replied that reading Jewish papers depressed him with all the troubles they were suffering. When he opened the pages of 'Der Stürmer' things were much rosier - apparently Jews were taking over the world!

Bearing in mind that the 'Protocols' first appeared over 100 years ago, to take them seriously you would have to believe both the conspiracy theory - which like all other conspiracy theories is a mixture of half truths and innuendo - and then believe, as the 'Protocols' themselves suggest, that Jews are willing to wait for generations for their dream to come true. Frankly after the Holocaust this is all pretty sick stuff and the only way to derive any understanding from this book is to see just what was in the minds of so many people in the first half of the last century - not least the Nazis.

Apparently this book is a best seller in Arab countries, for obvious, if sad, reasons. Some argue that this book should be banned - should such a thing be possible, which it is not. I am not an advocate of this point of view - the Nazis were very good at deciding what people should and should not read and that really says it all in my view. I am sure if people want to read this book they will but frankly there are better things to do with your time.
