Great music, grate text. - Rated
The music and harmonies in this hymnbook are exceptional. I can only think of two where I prefer to use the good old English Hymnal or Hymms Ancient and Modern (Revised) to the arrangements in this tome. Regrettably, however, the same cannot be said of the words in this book. They have been gratuitously edited, and much of the poetry, not to mention the intentions of the original authors, has been removed. About one third of the hymns have had their words altered. Sometimes, this is for ostensibly laudable reasons of removing exclusive or militaristic language, but frequently it seems to be for reasons that I simply cannot fathom, perhaps just because the editors wanted to change something. The music would merit 5 stars, the appallingly edited text merits none. In fairness, therefore, I would like to give it two and a half. When it's a choice between two or three stars, I choose the lower because the altered words have so damaged my enjoyment of far too many fine hymns.

We adopted this hymn book in our parish a few months ago, and have found the selection of hymns and chants excellent - there really is something for everyone. I thoroughly recommend it!
