Budding mad scientists - start here! - Rated
The book is great fun, and contains science that doesn't really feel like science. My seven year-old daughter loves the buzzing baloon experiment and we've had hours of (rather messy) fun with the custard powder solid/liquid mixture.
The serious point behind the book is that, at a time when changing attitudes and an ever-more stringent health and safety regime mean that fewer and fewer youngsters are interested in science, showing them how much fun it can be to tinker around with things in this way could be one of the most useful things you could do for them.

I was impressed by the real sense of fun running through the whole book. It would be ideal for parents stuck with the kids on a rainy day - and particularly appealing to fathers, I suspect - especially if someone else was going to tidy up the kitchen afterwards.
There's some inspirational science here, but in our house it sparked a series of "why" and "how " questions that sent us heading for the science textbooks!
Our youngest son was particularly taken with the gooey experiments - some lovely photos of sticky fingers to remember out experiments.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

While the "irresponsibility" of the stuff in this book pretty much extends to the amount of time I've wasted on it and not to any real dangerous activity it might encourage, it's still enormous fun!! Great present for Father's Day.

If you've ever been at the end of 'dodgy' happenings - from family, friends or Neighbours - you'll love this book. Much of the fun lies in trying to decide what to take with a pinch of salt but I concluded that the more hilarious/improbable, the more likely to be the genuine article. Buy it for Father's Day and you'll have a friend for life.
It's not too late for Father's Day.... - Rated
This is the sort of book that promotes father/son bonding - and I don't just mean with superglue. Actually, of course, no parents or children are excluded from the family Einstein-fest, but as I was reading it I couldn't help having a vision of an irate mother castigating her shamefaced spouse as yet another child ends up in hyperspace or with a permanent worry about corks.
Okay - I exaggerate. But it's well worth a read, and as a fun way of bringing science down to size (and into the kitchen), I recommend it.
