Clarice Bean, That's Me!

Poor Clarice Bean, sharing her bedroom with her irritating brother Minal Cricket, coping with his tendency towards hanging upside down until he turns purple, and having to squish all her worldly goods into the tiniest of spaces. It just doesn't seem fair, especially as her boy-obsessed, lipstick wearing sister has a room all to herself, as does her older brother Kurt--a non-communicative teenager "in the dark tunnel of adolescence".

It's true - there is more to Lauren Child than Charlie and Lola! - Rated
I own this book in a collection of other titles by Lauren Child (The three original Charlie and Lola books, Hubert Horatio, That Pesky Rat etc) and it's equally as charming as any other Lauren Child picture book.

Clarice Bean is a sassy and confident schoolgirl who dreams of a room of her own. In this delightful debut, she introduces us to herself, her family and her noisy, nosy and trouble-making neighbour Robert Granger. The part where her younger brother barges in is not as annoying as suggested, it is just funny enough. I find some parts of the book teen oriented, particularly the parts where Clarice takes a sneek peek in her older sister Marcie's room and her parents talking outside her big brother Kurt's room. Other than that, there is a lovely combination of illustrations and photography.

Not Charlie and Lola - Rated
I bought this after enjoying several Charlie and Lola books with our 3 and 5 yr old kids. Yes, the format and the pictures are similar, but the material is for much older kids. Mine just don't "get" any of it, and as they take everything on such a literal level it's just giving them naughty ideas. "It's boring and the people are all really naughty" was their conclusion. I'll be putting it away for a couple of years before I try it again with them. There was a fair few bits that made me smile though!

It's not only for Girls!!
I read this to my 7 year old son and we loved it. i like the weird type too and the pictures. The humour works on several levels and although i cant imagine a 4 year old getting *any* of it, my 5 year old heard bits and pieces of her adventures.

She has an array of friends and enemies with whom the reader will identify and the observations of Clarice on her parents behavious will ahve you in stitches.

This book is great. I can't rave enough about it! I'm actually eighteen and first spotted the Clarice Bean books in the library where I work on Saturdays, and was hooked instantly. The illustrations are original and cute, and the text is brilliant, with a dry sense of humour and also a really great rhythm when you read it out loud according to the different fonts used for each character. Suitable for small kids and also older ones (like me....)
