Customer Reviews

Tad Williams can do so much better - Rated 1/5
Shadowmarch was a good book. It set up an interesting premise and had a good stock of well drawn characters that looked like they would develop nicely.

Shadowplay ruins all of that careful groundwork and must be one of the worst examples of the "middle volume malaise" that afflicts fantasy trilogies. Characters wander aimlessly so that they end up in position for book 3. Periods of exposition are clumsy and irritating, revealing that the deep mysteries hinted at in book 1 are simply a rehashing of classical mythology. An epic siege fails to grip in any way, comparing poorly with the superlative descriptions in the First Law books 2 + 3.

On the basis of this, I will not be buying book 3, which is a real shame, as Tad Williams has shown he can do so much better in the Otherland quartet. This series is now much more reminiscent of the semantically mismatched Memory, Thorn and Sorrow trilogy, which is not a good thing.

I miss Otherland - Rated 2/5
where is the dazzling imagination of the Tad williams of Otherland ans Memory Sorrow and Thorn? Here there's dullness, sadness, gloom and cruelty, and nothing even remotely pleasant. What a disappointment!
