Customer Reviews

Excellent - a great read - Rated 5/5
A great book. I often stayed up until the early hours reading just to get through it and then regretted it!

Please don't waste your money - Rated 1/5
I had heard and read good things about this book and I have to admit, like others on here, that the simplistic cover and genre attracted me to it.

However, I was sorely dissappointed from the first page. I just couldn't get into it. To me, the characters are the only reason to read a book and the ones in The Magicians Guild were about as enthralling as card board cut outs. I just didn't care what happened to any of them and that is where the magic was lost for me. If the characters didn't feel real, then the whole world that surrounds them holds no interest for me either.

I feel like I've been cheated out of the money I used to buy it.

Harry Potter for grown-ups - Rated 4/5
The Magicians Guild has a definite feel that this could become a more adult version of the Harry Potter series. The Magicians Guild starts the trilogy with a relatively simple story filled with a great deal of description to set the scene for the world that it is set in. This is a relatively common pitfall for an series of books where the first novel spends most of its time describing the world rather than telling the story.

The story is simple, how the Magicians Guild learns that a slum-dweller possesses magical abilities and their subsequent efforts to find her before she begins to cause harm to herself and others. Though this book is very well written and a pleasure to read, it is offset by the fact that it seems that very little does occur throughout. Moreover it does seem that some of the characters are still slightly one-dimensional by the end, however one must remember that this the beginning of a series and so promises to show a good deal more character development as the books continue.

I suppose that it is a necessary evil for a series to sacrifice the first book to description so that the others can concentrate upon story. Though be assured that this is a nice piece of Fantasy literature and I am intrigued to see how the next book will follow on.

Recommended - Rated 4/5
I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite the fact "Part One" can only be described as drawn out towards the finish. Overall however the book is very good with a creative storyline in an interesting new world I found myself curious about. The main character Sonea is very likeable as are many of the other characters, with the obvious hateable villain present, as is formula.
The concluding chapters definitely make the book a page-turner even though one can meander through the start of the book. However, this doesn't mean it isn't interesting and I would certainly recommend it to anybody who enjoys the fantasy genre and wants a break from Harry Potter.

The start of a great trilogy - Rated 4/5
This book begins with possibly one of the best opening sentences. It encaptivated me from start to end. I felt i read it just like i read the Harry Potter books, you get to a certain part of the story then you just can't put it down. I have read many fantasy novels and this one just sucked me in. The way Ms Canavan develops the relationships between characters adds alot of depth to the story to make you feel a part of her fantasy world. Perhaps aimed at slightly younger adult readers with the shortish chapter lengths and the simple plots. However i felt this made the story flow much better than adding in unnessicary details that so many fantasy writers do. The only reason i have not given this 5 stars is due to the fact that i reserve that to the truly epic books such as Raymond E Fiest's 'Magician' and the JRR Tolkien books. I just hope the rest of these stories are as good as the first.
