Customer Reviews

Mr.Mulliner - Rated 4/5
I fully enjoyed this rather strange yet interesting book tho I was rather disappointed when I read the blurb where it promised to be a funny book of which I disagree. But I still highly recommend this book to all but if you are looking for a good laugh of a book I suggest to look else where.
Hope I helped !

The Teenager Obsessed With Books

The Fishermans Tales - Rated 5/5
In the bar-parlour of the Angler's Rest the efficient barmaid Miss Postlewaite was asking who was the greatest of all the Wodehouse comic creations. A Port and Lemon ventured that it would be `Lord Emsworth', `Bertie Wooster surely?' suggested a surly Gin and Tonic, `What of Psmith or Ukridge or The Oldest Member?' questioned an aggressive half of Mild. `But what of Mr Mulliner?' asked a stranger in the corner, `surely the Mulliner family crave you inclusion?'. The bar was undecided and the conversation moved on to weather Elvis Costello's new album was as good as his early work.

We first meet the Mulliners in this book and the jury is still out if they can be considered amongst the Wodehouse sagas as Mr Mulliner himself merely frames the stories and the family motif is really a mechanism for a short story writer not requiring ten new surnames every new volume. We meet Mulliners whom are curates to overbearing clergy, salesmen of patent medicines and even the class of men that writes detective fiction, but what do we learn from the Mulliners.

Well of course we learn nothing but we are constantly reminded of what it is to laugh. God is surely in heaven and the Larch on the Thorn, surely the Mulliner family crave you inclusion?

THE AVUNCULAR MR MULLINER - Rated 5/5
If only British pubs were like this today! This collection of short stories is a series of anecdotes from Mr Mulliner, related to us as we relax in the Anglers' Rest; in those cheerful days when people wore tweeds and went to pubs just to talk over a quiet pint of stout & mild. Mr Mulliner holds our attention from start to finish and, happily, he's never interrupted by the loud dance music or plasma screens found in many of today's public houses.
Having enjoyed the Jeeves & Wooster stories, I felt the need to read more Wodehouse. However, it was with some apprehension that I chose Mr Mulliner. I knew nothing of him beforehand, but decided to take a blind punt and hope for the best. I was in luck. The stories are sufficiently different from Jeeves & Wooster to be fresh and exciting, whilst written in the same reliable style. As usual, the narratives tend to revolve around young men falling in love with jolly young gals; however, this doesn't become tedious, as the situations in which they find themselves never fail to interest.
Mr Mulliner is a real winner; you can buy with confidence!!

Priceless stories - Rated 5/5
This collection of short stories tells just some of the hilarious and unlikely adventures of Mr Mulliner's numerous relatives, as recounted by Mr Mulliner himself in the Angler's Rest. Whatever mishaps come the way of these characters, fate always conspires to bring about a happy ending. Amongst other things you will learn about the transforming effects of Mulliner's Buck-U-Uppo on the meek curate, Augustine Mulliner, and read what really happens should you happen to pull the communication-cord on a country train. Not to mention the sinister events when a writer of hardboiled detective novels unwisely makes a stay in Honeysuckle Cottage. These priceless stories are great entertainment if you have an idle moment or are looking for something light to read.

Dreary, dull and not very funny - Rated 1/5
In Picadilly Jim, PG WOdehouse describes how the butler can make the funniest material sound sepulcheral. Wodehouse himself described Mr Mulliner as the 'funniest thing I have written'. Sadly Richard Griffiths seems to have taken his hint from Picadilly Jim rather than the great man himself. Lines that Jonathon Cecil, Richard Briars and Simon Callow could make hysterically funny are intoned in the manner of funeral director aplogising to the congregation for the late arrival of the coffin. His Mr Mulliner is the pub bore; the man you'd run a mile from rather than listen to him for more than a few seconds.

"the funniest thing I've ever written"? Not from this recording it isn't. Try Right Ho Jeeves read by Simon Callow to see how it should be done.
