Customer Reviews

funniest and most useful - Rated 5/5
This book is a strange concept in that you can sit in your armchair and read the anecdotes about batty vicars and loopy aristocrats and roar with laughter, or use it as a tourist guide. It has a fabulous and most thorough section on the unbelievable pursuits the British get up to - gurning championhips (that's making revoltingly ugly faces) black pudding throwing world championships (the account of this had me giggling), world pea-shooting championships, garlic festival. We went there and tried the garlic ice cream. Yeach! What is true is that you can get to a lifetime's worth of fascinating places where you will find no tourists, no buses, no admission charges, no car park charges, no gift shop. - just really really interesting places. A great book by a man who clearly loves his country and it quirkiness. If you've got any sense of humour or curiosity, I doubt if you'll be disappointed. A friend of mine got the first edition of this and went to many of the daft things - the mud marathon in Essex for example. This expanded edition is even better. How did the Poms conquer the world with such a breed of nutters?
