You do not have to be a Vietnam War freak to read it - although it helps - Rated 5/5
No, seriously, this book is a really good and interesting read. If it is true that we are what we eat, then for the soldiers it is almost true that they are (for a large part) what they build and what they defend (and where some of them die). Now, Special Forces Camps in Vietnam were (by definition) a special place. For those who would not know about it - Americans couldn't control all Vietnam during the war, but in order to deny to the enemy the freedom of action in parts they couldn't really hold, they waged a guerilla war. Yes, that is right - Americans waged a guerilla war against the Vietcong and North Vietnamese Army in some of the most remote regions of Vietnam, using for that mostly local minorities, supported and trained by Special Forces (aka mostly as Green Berets, although there were also different special forces units). Guerillas raised from the minorities lived in and around fortified camps, and attacked Vietcong supply lines and any other target that would present itself. Now, these camps were build mostly with what could be easily transported (dropped by planes) and with locally available materials, which gave a totally unique kind of fortification - the description of the construction and maintenance of these places is surprisingly interesting. Another part of the book describes examples of battles waged around those camps, including the already legendary "Night of the Silver Stars" at Lang Vei in 1968, which in itself is a topic worth a separate book (there are some). A well illustrated, short book to recommend to everybody interested in Vietnam War or military history. I liked it greatly.
