In at the Deep End - Jim Crawley - Rated In at the deep end has proved to be an excellent reference for new and experienced teachers in Further Education colleges, particularly if they are undertaking a Cert Ed course. It's most important message is that the sector undergoes change continuously and the professional teacher is one who has skills in managing that change. The book is full of good ideas and strategies for action. It is not a theoretical book on pedagogy although this is not missing. The book integrates the theory and practice in such a way that it reads as a practical way to do things... properly. There is a strongly reflective approach that genuinely makes it "a survival guide". I referred students to it during the current academic year and the response has been unusual, something like: "Here is a book that sees it from the teacher's perspective, not the educational theorist's perspective". I warmly recommend it.
