If you only get one knitting book, let it be this one - Rated
This book is my knitting Bible. Debbie Bliss really knows what she is talking about and passes on her valuable knowledge in a simple and clear way. In easy steps, with well thought out projects along the way, she takes you from the basics of knitting, right through to designing your own knitwear. After several disastrous and unsatisfying attempts at learning to knit over the years, I bought this book to see if I could finally master knitting and I've never looked back; its a real passion now. Using this book as a guide and valuable reference, I can now knit anything that takes my fancy and I've always got a project on the go. I have been amazed at what I've achieved and I still use this book constantly. I would recommend it to anyone and if you are starting out, there can be no better foundation.
A valuable book for anyone who wants to be a competent knitter - Rated
I discovered this book a few years ago having previously only knitted scarfs and blankets. I found this book very informative. The instructions were very clear and demysitfyed how to follow a pattern something I had found so off putting for so long. The workshops move progressively and build your confidence in the craft. I think that Debbie Bliss has managed to "talk" you through the book quite well. I was delighted with how my garter stitch bag turned out it was a very neat and even fabric. I became comfortable with holding the needles and keeping tension. Although the written pattern is very simple it prepares you for reading other more challenging patterns in the book. I found that by reading the workshop chapters a few times I felt confident to tackle a new technique and complete another project.
I definitely feel that I have become a more confident knitter and would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn how to knit and get the most out of this throughly relaxing and addictive craft. A few years on I have found that Debbie Bliss' book is one that I refer to time and time again with affection.
Now I can knit - thanks to a very good book. - Rated
I bought this book last autumn to begin knitting as a complete beginner. My friend (who knits) had a look at it and very soon bought her own copy as it contained more advanced patterns that she was keen to learn. This book has answered every one of my questions. It's always worth getting someone to guide you through your very first stitches, but this book takes over when you need to: - cast on/off - increase/decrease - change colour - add pattern/lace details - add twists/bobbles It supplements knitting patterns by interpreting the jargon. A single knitting book cannot teach you absolutely everything that you would ever need to know - but this one comes very close!
Ok, but... - Rated
While this book taught me the basics of how to knit, and i did go from not having a clue, to knitting the first project(a garter stich bag). i have since found that im having an hard time and having to ask for help. I found the pictures for showing how to increase unhelpful and didnt master that from the book, and beware many of the projects in the book is childrens jumpers or hat or baby blanket. The way the book is written keeps you interested to a certain degree but i cant help thinking you're taught the very basics and then plunged in the deep end with more complicated stuff with little explaination which is pretty pointless when its meant to be a beginners guide. i suppose its a decent enough guide but not recommended to use alone to learn how to knit.

After years of only being confident enough to handle knit and purl, I have mastered cable and lace knitting within one day - and it's all thanks to this fantastic book. Very clear photos so you can see what your stitches will look like and simple directions mean that I feel much more confident to follow a knitting pattern on my own! Much recommended!
