I'm afraid I'm off the bus... - Rated
I'm not a train spotter but nevertheless I can't deny that trains (particularly stream trains) do have a certain fascination and charm - as in the BBC's 'Great railways journeys of the world' - a charm which sadly buses just don't posess. Therefore the actual mode of transport that forms the raison d'etre of this book doesn't really add to its appeal. (And that's not to mention the "unfamous places" that are visited on the buses!)
The book is a travelogue of various journeys throughout the UK undertaken completely on buses, with each of the 25 chapters describing a different trip. As well as describing the actual journey the chapters also comment on the history, geography and sociology of the areas/towns visited. These comments are usually quite interesting but I found many a bit dry. I did, however, enjoy the odd reports on social contact on the buses - old people bitching, drunken teenagers on a Glasgow night bus - and would have liked more of those and a bit less history

Very, very good - knowingly fogeyish with some incredibly obscure and fascinating historical material, served with a wonderfully light touch. One slight gripe - it could've used some editing. It's basically too long.
Bringing the landscape to life. - Rated
David McKie takes the reader along on his journey across a landscape of tales, turning detective to uncover the hidden histories, stories and legends which lie waiting to be discovered in the backwaters of Great Britain. McKie ties this all together with his witty observations of what he sees around him on his journeys and deliveres not just an entertaining, insightfull read but offers us a whole new way to look at the places which we normally pass through with little thought.
Funny and Beguiling - Rated
This is not a book for bus-spotters. Instead it is for anyone who shares David McKie's passion for fascinating detail, obscure yet startling history, and the sheer variety of this country. There is delight on every page.
