Gerald was a tall giraffe Whose neck was long and slim, But his knees were awfully bandy And his legs were rather thin...
Every year Gerald dreads the great Jungle Dance, and feels ashamed that he cannot tango and two-step with the rest of the jungle animals. But then one day he realises that it doesn't matter that he is different from everyone else--its just that he needs a different tune to dance to.

A lovely story, wittily illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees and told in rhyme by the award-winning author Giles Andreae, it has a stealth and humour that makes it perfect for reading aloud. Giraffes Can't Dance is a nifty little 1story that children and adults will love to read time and time again. (Ages 3 to 5 years) --Susan Harrison

Customer Reviews

That different drummer we all want to listen to - Rated 5/5
For me and my child, this book was a treasure. The story of a giraffe who can't dance until he hears his "own" music, this is a great way to teach your child about differences in people, and animals.

The illustrations alone are worth the price, and the words catch the children's ears at once. We all dance to a different drummer and that is basically this book's message.

Made me cry.... - Rated 5/5
I bought this book after reading so many good reviews on this site. I couldn't even get through it without crying!!! That may have been an over-reaction but it really is a wonderful story and the illustrations are beautiful. Definitely my favourite book in my daughter's collection (and let's face it, it's just as important for the parents to love the kid's books as they're the ones reading them out loud every day of their lives!).

We all dance to a different beat - Rated 5/5
Giles Andreae is the respectable side of Purple Ronnie, so it is no surprise that this poetry is an instant hit with pre-schoolers. My daughter already has Commotion in Ocean and Rumble in the Jungle (our copies came with a Hugh Laurie CD), so this is another sure fire winner. The illustrations are lush and warm, the story is one of triumph of self-doubt, and it is neither too long nor too short.

A welcome addition to the story shelf.

Fantastic book, must have read for all children! - Rated 5/5
My daughter has enjoyed this brilliant book since the age of two, now aged four she 'reads' the rhymes to all of her dolls on a weekly basis enjoying every minute.
This book captures the imaginations of all children through rhyme and fun, whilst delivering the important message that even though we may all be different, we all are able to achieve our dreams when we find our ' music that we love!'

"Don't judge a book by it's cover????" - Rated 5/5
Another wonderful book from Giles Andreae. The other animals laugh at Gerald the Girafe because gangly "Girafes can't Dance" but Gerald learns from an unusual source that he can dance wonderfully when he can hear his own music. A real treaure that teaches children and adults alike that appearances can be deceptive and we must look past the cover. Look past this books cover and you find yourself on a magical road to self awareness. A great tool for discussing all forms of prejudice or just a wonderfully funny book. Read and enjoy whilst reader and child learn a valuable lesson for life.
