Excellent, like all Falkner's books - Rated
Falkner is an extremely knowledgeable military expert of this period. His other works, including the Duke of Marlborough's more famous victory at Blenheim in this excellent series, have proved captivating reading, so I looked forward to this book with enthusiasm. It did not disappoint.
Ramillies is a lesser known battle to the public at large, though it was arguably a greater victory than Blenheim; certainly it was unquestionably Marlborough who fought and won it (Blenheim, on some parts of the Continent, is more attributed to Prince Eugene). It was at least significant enough for a Royal Navy warship to be named after it. As I've come to expect of Falkner, the book is written in an easy-to-read style, with lots of good additional information about the personalities involved, and the tactics and disposition of the armies. It is primarily a military book, though the background to the conflict is well outlined along with the significance.
Most remarkably, perhaps, the casual reader will have no trouble enjoying it, but there is also enough detail for the more serious historian. A bonus is the inclusion of maps and the book is liberally illustrated throughout.
It is likely this book will leave you wanting more, in which case you could usefully check out "Blenheim" in the same series and "Great and Glorious Days", both by the same author (I've reviewed these also) the latter covering all Marlborough's battles in this conflict. "Ramillies" is no mere lift from the longer work; while some details are inevitably the same there is still more to be gleaned here. It supplements rather than duplicates "Great and Glorious Days".
Excellent reading for all who are interested in this largely forgotten, but significant, period in Britain's history.
A COMPLETE VICTORY - Rated
This is another excellent volume from Pen and Sword's splendid Battleground Europe series and is as far as I am aware, the only publication written to date, that is dedicated to this specific battle. It is both handy sized and very affordable and it includes a very useful guide for walking the battlefield therefore making it a handy companion for anyone wishing to visit the battlefield. In common with other titles in this series, it is packed full of black and white photographs and copies of period engravings and paintings. There are a few colour plates, plus some very useful maps too. The detailed bibliographical information on the key personalities involved and tables of casualties including those wounded and killed will be helpful to the more serious researcher and student of military history.
